A female escort is a prostitute who does not display her profession to the general public, nor work in an institution such as a brothel. She typically works for an escort agency and is booked by calling a telephone number. She may be hired for in-call or out-call services. She can be paid a substantial amount of money for her services, which feels very empowering to many women. The majority of escorts are between 25 and 35 years old. They are usually well educated, goal oriented women from all walks of life. They choose to become escorts for various reasons including financial constraints, unsupportive partners, mental health issues or the lack of other career choices.

This study used a web-based data collection method to collect information on female escorts’ advertised fees for sexual services. Female escorts’ pictures and biographical information were collected from an online escort directory. All pictures were downloaded and coded for whether there was nude breast or buttocks exposure. Contact information was extracted and coded for the woman’s phone, e-mail address and website. Duplicates were eliminated using a geographically-based matching system.

Previous research has found that males prefer young, attractive women as short-term mating partners (Buss & Schmidt, 1993; Kurzban & Weeden, 2005). The results of this study indicate that female escorts advertise their fees to increase demand for their sexual services by positioning themselves as highly desirable compared to their competitors. The use of photographs depicting nudity, flirting and highlighting beauty appear to be effective marketing strategies for escorts. Future research should explore additional strategies that female escorts employ to increase their prices and arouse men’s interest in their sexual services.
