The NGO Janaagraha started the Bala Janaagraha program in the academic year 2003-2004, which is a Practical Civics program to develop good citizenship values in school children. So far it has seen 1100 children from 24 private schools in Bangalore benefit from it.

From the academic year 2004-2005, Akshara has taken on the responsibility of co-coordinating with Janaagraha to conduct the Bala Janaagraha program in government schools as well. In the first instance, 40 government schools in Bangalore will be selected. No distinction will be made between private school children and government school children. We believe that inculcating good leadership and citizenship values is essential especially in government school children because they can change the direction of their fellow community members and ultimately change poor communities.

Bala Janaagraha is a 12-session course that is offered between June and December of the academic year. The course will include both classroom learning and community sessions, and is based on ‘joyful learning’ through small-group cooperative learning, projects, discussions, games, activities and field trips. Children are encouraged to think differently and out-of-the-box, something that the decades of rote learning in the Indian educational system has suppressed. Local residents in each ward will be closely involved with the school children in that ward, to help build a strong sense of community, involvement and pride in their local area. Ward Development sessions will also be conducted, such as the Clean-School program, Neighbourhood Traffic Control, Garbage Pickup monitoring, Greening, Adopt-a-Road program etc.
